Requirements
Who Can Become an Instructor?
To hold a NSW driving instructor licence, you must:
- Be aged 21 or over
- Hold a current, unrestricted Australian driver licence
- Have held that licence class for at least 3 of the last 4 years
- Have a safe driving record (parking offences aside)
- Be medically fit to drive
- Be considered a fit and proper person by Transport for NSW
- Hold (or have applied for) a Working With Children Check
The Process
How to Become a Driving Instructor in NSW

Check You're Eligible
Make sure you meet every requirement above before you apply. The licence-history and driving-record rules catch people out most often.

Apply Through Service NSW
Lodge your driving instructor licence application online or at a service centre. Once your eligibility is confirmed, Transport for NSW sends you a Letter of Eligibility.

Complete Your Training
Enrol with a registered training provider (they'll need your Letter of Eligibility) and complete the Certificate IV in Motor Vehicle Driver Training (TLI41222) within 12 months of applying.

Pass the Instructor Tests
Sit Transport for NSW's instructor knowledge test and practical driving test. The driving test is assessed to a much higher standard than a regular licence test.

Get Licensed & Start Teaching
Once you're approved you're issued a driving instructor licence, valid for 5 years, and you can start teaching learners.
Common Questions
- How long does it take to become a driving instructor in NSW?
- It depends mostly on how quickly you work through the Certificate IV course. Many people finish in a few months, but you have up to 12 months from submitting your application to complete the training.
- Do I need my own car?
- Not to get licensed, but you'll need a suitable vehicle to teach in, usually fitted with dual controls. Some instructors work under an established school that provides one, others buy and fit out their own.
- Can I teach part-time?
- Yes. Plenty of instructors start part-time alongside another job and build up from there, since lessons can be scheduled whenever suits you and your learners.
- Where can I check the official requirements?
- Service NSW publishes the current eligibility rules, fees and application form. Requirements can change, so always check there before you apply.
